I think the major issue is for public transport to be improved, well in Perth anyway. I live about 5 kms from where I work. Catching a bus would take forever, but I can drive there in 10 minutes. Public transport should be just that, public and should not be privatised and then profit would not be the driving force. People should be given a huge discount if they are traveling to and from work, so salary sacrifice would be perfect. The use of cars is an issue that will have to be addressed, but will probably be in the too hard basket for quite sometime yet.

Totally in favour of packaging bikes and public transport (PT). I am unable to package my car as I do too few kilometres in the year due to my cycling and PT habits. Let me know where to sign up!

From my observations, the public transport sector has long been a (expensive) taxpayer sponsored way of keeping unemployment down. Have you noticed the number of people who spend their days doing nothing at the train station / ferry terminal?

I digress.
Allowing the salary sacrifice of public transport will do (at least) three positive things:

1. Make the cost of public transport affordable (bad enough its inefficient, let alone expensive)
2. Encourages people to leave their gas guzzlers at home
3. Helps support employment for the lazy and unambitious in the transport sector.

We all win!
